World Language Courses

Depending on a student’s prior language study and the level of the coursework, transfer credits may be considered to fulfill the or may count as general elective credit toward the total credits required for the degree program.

Bachelor of Arts – World Language Proficiency Requirement Credit
Elementary-level language courses may be considered to fulfill this requirement:

  • If the coursework is in a different language than the student studied for two or more years in high school.
  • If the student completed the coursework in high school through an approved college dual enrollment/credit program (e.g. Running Start, Early College, etc.).
  • If two or more years of an elementary-level language have been completed in high school and the student later completes elementary-level coursework in the same language at a college or university, the transfer coursework must be completed at least five years after the student last studied the same language in high school.
  • If two or more years of an elementary-level world language have been completed in high school within the previous five years, transfer credit coursework in the same language must be completed at the intermediate level or higher.

Some majors may accept American Sign Language (ASL) courses to fulfill the BA World Language Proficiency Requirement. Refer to the program requirements in the to determine if ASL courses are accepted for a specific major. ASL courses follow the same elementary and intermediate-level course requirements as any other world language course.
