The UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law has a variety of of options for students wishing to study law in the United States, including J.D., LL.M, Master's, and Certificate programs. In our graduate programs, lawyers and non-lawyers can pursue a post-graduate degree in three specialized areas of the law - Intellectual Property, Commerce & Technology, and International Criminal Law & Justice.

Who is considered an international student?
Anyone who is not a permanent resident (green card holder) or a citizen of the US. Students who live in NH but have not applied or been granted permanent residency are considered international students and therefore do not qualify for in-state tuition and fees. Citizenship always supersedes residency.
What makes me an eligible student?
Undergraduate students
GPA: U.S. 2.7 and above recalculated GPA from grades 9, 10, and 11. At UNH, we calculate a student’s GPA in-house, based on our core course guidelines.
What are the English proficiency requirements?
Undergraduate and graduate students
Exams accepted and minimum scores accepted
IELTS 6.5+, TOEFL 4.5+, PTE 59+, Duolingo 120+.
When to request an English exam waiver
Undergraduate applicants who take the SAT and score 500+ on the verbal section. Applicants studying at a school where English is the official medium of instruction

Franklin Pierce School of Law Students
J.D. programs
Applicants whose native language is not English and who received an undergraduate degree from a country where English is not the native language must provide a TOEFL score taken within two years of application submission. The TOEFL school code is 3396.
International applicants with foreign transcripts must submit all transcripts through the LSAC CAS, and all undergraduate work outside the U.S. or Canada must be evaluated by CAS
Gradaute programs
Applicants whose native language is not English must provide a TOEFL or IELTS score taken within three years of application submission. If the applicant earned an undergraduate degree where English was the medium of instruction, no test is required — but signed documentation from a university administrator confirming this is needed. No other English proficiency tests are accepted.
Accepted scores:
- TOEFL Paper: 550 / iBT: 80. Note that for tests taken after January 21, 2026, the minimum shifts to a score of 4 on the new 1–6 scale, equivalent to 80 on the 0–120 scale.
- IELTS: 6.5
Do I need a credential evaluation?
Undergraduate students
You do not need credential evaluation for undergraduate applications. We do require students to submit their academic credentials in English, though.
Graduate students
Transcript evaluation by a third party is not required as long as the transcript is in English. However, if transcripts are in a language other than English, credential evaluations are required. Additionally, translation and evaluation services may be requested at the discretion of the academic department.
Are there scholarships for international students?
Yes, international students are eligible for the merit-based scholarship as well as the International Engagement Service Scholarship. The International Engagement and Service Scholarship (IESS) support high-achieving international undergraduate students with financial need. How can I apply?
Undergraduate students
The undergraduate admissions process is standard: you can apply via the Common Application, which is a single application that allows students to apply to many universities in a streamlined process. At UNH, we require at least one letter of recommendation, an English language proficiency test, and your high school/secondary school transcript(s). For details, please check out our website on
Graduate students
Some academic departments recommend that international applicants planning on pursuing a research-based degree, submit our before submitting a full application. The extended inquiry form will be reviewed by the academic faculty and a department representative will reach out if your background and qualifications are a good fit for the program.

The full application is required for all applicants to complete. Here is some helpful information for international applicants:
- The application fee is $65 for a degree program and $25 for a graduate certificate.
- Application fee waivers are not available for most programs in most circumstances. Applicants are expected to pay the fee.
- Refer to the application requirements section of each to understand deadlines and application requirements.
- To better understand your cost of attendance, please refer to the OISS Estimate of Costs and Tuition and Fees.
- Applicants will be required to provide the names and emails of 2 or 3 recommenders.
- Once submitted, applicants must monitor their application portal for updates on required checklist items.
- An email notification will be sent when checklist items are complete.
- Processing of documents and requests can take 5-7 business days.
What programs at UNH are STEM?
There are 180 programs at UNH that are considered STEM, mostly with our and . They range from biomedical science and information technology to engineering and analytical economics.
Are international students eligible for Financial Aid?
International students are NOT eligible for U.S. federal financial aid. However, international students can be eligible for merit-based and other international scholarships.
