The following instructions are for how students can update a local or permanent address:

- Select Personal Information
- Select View/Update Personal Information
- Select the Pencil Icon under Address to enter changes

What is a Preferred Name?
- A preferred first name is the name a student wishes to be known by at UNH.
- A legal name change is not required to use a preferred first name at UNH.
- UNH is continuing to expand how and where preferred names are used.
Where Names Appear
Legal Name
Where legal name is still required and appears:
- Diplomas (unless requested otherwise)
- Financial aid, health insurance, and medical records
- Transcripts and enrollment verification
- Immigration documents (for international students)
- Student employment (HR/payroll)
- Official letters sent to parents/legal guardians
- UNH publications (E.g. Dean's List)
- Counseling & health services (with option to select preferred name at registration)
UNH staff with a need to know (e.g., financial aid, police, health, tech support) may see both legal and preferred names.
Preferred First Name
Where preferred first name appears:
- Canvas, Class Rosters, Advisee Lists, Degree Audit, Grade Reports, Wildcat Advising & Careers, Webcat (Unofficial Transcript), and Accounts Management System.
- Accommodate, Housing & Residential Life, Dining, Facilities Self-Service, Parent Portal, and Library Sign-Out.
- UNH Email, Office 365, Zoom, Computer Labs/Clusters, and IT Service Desk (also shows legal name).
- Student ID, Student Identity Record (both legal and preferred name), Academic Technology Support Center (shows both).
- Directory Listing (unless disclosure exclusion on file), and Granite Square Station Mailroom (shows both).
How to Update Preferred Name
The below guide explains how to add or change a preferred name:
- Log into Webcat
- Go to ‘Personal Information’
- Select ‘View/Update Personal Information’
- Click the pencil icon next to ‘Preferred First Name’
- Make the edit and click ‘Update’ to save
Note: Changes may take up to 24 hours to appear across systems.
Preferred Name & UNH Email
- If updating a preferred name before receiving an @unh.edu email, the address will reflect the preferred name (e.g., PreferredFirstName.LastName@unh.edu).
- If updating a preferred name after receiving a UNH email address, request an email alias update through the IT Help Desk.
Pronouns
- In myWildcat Success (EAB Navigate): Go to ‘User Preferences’ to select pronouns.
- In Canvas: Go to ‘User Account’ settings to update pronouns.
Directory Information
- The Student Directory shows name and UNH email address to others with a UNH login.
- To remove personal information from the directory, complete the Prevent Disclosure of Information form.
