Honors Units for National Fellowship Applications

Honors students may be eligible to earn Honors units by applying for select nationally competitive fellowships when working closely with the Office of National Fellowships. Award opportunities can fund graduate study, international experience, research, language learning, teaching, and more.

Students must meet the eligibility requirements for the fellowship they intend to pursue and complete a contract with the Office of National Fellowships. The fellowship application process often includes research, advising meetings, reflective writing, and multiple rounds of revision. Students interested in earning Honors Units through a fellowship application should carefully review the requirements below and complete all fellowship-specific expectations. The fellowships are categorized by funding type below.

Fellowships Available for Honors Units

Beinecke Scholarship – 1 unit

The funds graduate or doctoral study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The scholarship provides $5,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. Undergraduate juniors who are U.S. citizens and have a history of being eligible to receive need-based financial aid during undergraduate studies (slight preference for Pell Grant recipients) are encouraged to apply.

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By December 1, email the office (national.fellowships@unh.edu) to request the application materials and sign and submit the .
  • Submit nomination application by UNH deadline.
  • Note: Honors units are only available to the student who is nominated for the Beinecke Scholarship. If selected for nomination: 
    • Submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions of 1000-word professional and personal essay and CV. Drafts must be submitted at a minimum of 5 business days apart (business days are M-F 9AM – 5PM and exclude weekends and holidays). 

Churchill Scholarship – 4 units

The Churchill Scholarship offers a one-year research master’s in science, mathematics, and engineering at the University of Cambridge in the U.K. Recipients are selected based on academic and research achievements. The award covers tuition, airfare, visa fees, health surcharge, and a living stipend. US citizens are eligible to apply. Applications are due in the early fall of senior year; therefore, applicants must begin the process Spring of their junior year. UNH can only nominate 2 students for this scholarship. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By June 1 before the start of senior year, (1) complete the and (2) sign and submit the .
  • Following the suggested deadlines in the Office of National Fellowships timeline, submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions of short answer responses (Future Career Plans and Additional context for transcript), Proposed Research/Program of Study, and Academic and Research History before nomination and one (1) draft following nomination (if nominated).

Fulbright US Student Program – 4 units

The Fulbright US Student Program offers both Study/Research grants and English Teaching Assistantships (ETAs) in over 140 different countries. Grants are awarded in nearly all fields and disciplines, including the sciences, professional fields, and creative and performing arts. Fulbright provides a living stipend, travel to and from the host country, and other benefits depending on the host country. US citizens are eligible to apply. Applications are due in the early fall of senior year; therefore, applicants must begin the process Spring of their junior year. 

Requirements for Honors Units: 

  • By June 1 before the start of senior year, (1) meet with the Director of the Office of National Fellowships to share your intent to pursue this opportunity, (2) sign and submit the , (3) join the ONF Fulbright Canvas page (by invitation).
  • Following the suggested deadlines in the Office of National Fellowships timeline, submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions before the UNH deadline and one (1) revision post campus interview of all short answer responses (Abstract, Flexibility & Adaptability, Community Engagement, and Impact of Fulbright Award) and Statement of Grant Purpose
  • An interview is required.

Gates-Cambridge – 2 units

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are highly competitive awards for fully funded full-time graduate study and research in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. Recipients are selected on the following criteria: academic excellence, reasons for choice of course, commitment to improving the lives of others, and a capacity for leadership. Applications are due in the early fall of senior year; therefore, applicants must begin the process Spring of their junior year. 

Requirements for Honors Units:  

  • By August 1 before the start of senior year, (1) complete the and (2) sign and submit the .
  • Following the suggested deadlines in the Office of National Fellowships timeline, submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions of Gates-Cambridge selection questions and CV/resume.

James Madison Fellowship – 3 units

The James Madison Graduate Fellowship provides up to $24,000 for a two-year master’s degree to individuals desiring to become outstanding teachers of the American Constitution at the secondary school level. Applicants compete only against other applicants from their state of legal residence. Current seniors who are U.S. citizens are eligible to apply. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By December 15 of senior year, sign and submit the .
  • Submit three substantial rounds of revisions of all short answer questions  (Career Plans and Professional Goals; Activities List and short answer response on significance of activities to aspirations; Honors and Awards and short answer questions regarding significance of awards to aspirations) and essays (Personal Essay; Constitutional Essay) to national.fellowships@unh.edu. Drafts must be submitted at a minimum of 5 business days apart (business days are M-F 9AM – 5PM and exclude weekends and holidays).

Knight-Hennessy Scholars – 3 units

Knight-Hennessy funds graduate level study at Stanford University to create a cohort of scholars who learn together and collaborate on impactful projects. Applicants should exhibit independence of thought, purposeful leadership, and a civic mindset. In addition to funding up to three years of tuition, the fellowship also provides a stipend for living and academic expenses and a travel stipend for one annual trip to and from Stanford. Current juniors are eligible to apply. Must be accepted to Stanford University for graduate study.

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By June 1 before junior year, (1) complete the and (2) sign and submit the .
  • Following the Office of National Fellowships timeline, submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions of Work Experience, Activities, Awards and Honors, Resume, Short Answers (1 – Academic/Professional Goals, 2 – Engaged with someone with a different perspective, acted with courage, fell short of expectations, 3 – Eight Improbable Facts about You), and Essay on influences before UNH deadline and one (1) revision after the UNH deadline to national.fellowships@unh.edu.

Marshall Scholarship – 4 units

The Marshall Scholarship provides funding to U.S. citizens with a GPA of 3.7 or higher for graduate study in the U.K. and covers tuition, transportation to and from the U.K., a modest personal allowance, and qualified expenses such as books and thesis preparation. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit, leadership potential, and ambassadorial potential. U.S. citizens are eligible to apply. Applications are due in the early fall of senior year; therefore, applicants must begin the process Spring of their junior year. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By June 1 before the start of senior year, (1) complete the and (2) sign and submit the .
  • Following the suggested deadlines in the Office of National Fellowships timeline, submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions of short answers (Post Scholarship Plan, Personal Interests, Travel, Language Proficiency, Employment History, Unpaid Employment, Publications, Other Awards) and essays (Personal Statement, Proposed Academic Programme essay, Leadership essay, Ambassadorial Potential essay) before the UNH deadline and one (1) revision following the deadline.
  • An interview is required.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program – 3 units

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is a five-year fellowship that provides three years of financial support, including an annual stipend of $37,000 and $16,000 education allowance paid to the institution. Current juniors who are US citizens and intend to pursue a research-based master’s or doctorate in STEM or social science (economics, sociology, justice studies, political science) are eligible to apply. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • Enroll in INCO 791 in the Fall you intend to apply (or make alternative plans with the Director of the Office of National Fellowships).
  • By September 1 of senior year, sign and submit the .
  • Follow the course requirements regarding draft submissions. 

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship – 2 units

The DoD National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship Program is a competitive fellowship awarded to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. dual citizens who intend to pursue a Doctoral degree aligned to the DoD services Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) in research and development at a U.S. institution of their choice. The fellowship lasts three years and funds full tuition and mandatory fees, a monthly stipend ($38,400 annually), up to $1,200 a year for health insurance, and a $5,000 travel budget for professional development. Current seniors who are U.S. citizens are eligible to apply. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By September 1 of senior year, sign and submit the .
  • Submit three substantial rounds of revisions of CV/resume and all essays (Personal Essay and Research Essay) to national.fellowships@unh.edu. Drafts must be submitted at a minimum of 5 business days apart (business days are M-F 9AM – 5PM and exclude weekends and holidays).

Rhodes Scholarship – 4 units

The Rhodes Scholarship provides full financial support for 32 U.S. citizens to pursue a degree at the University of Oxford in the U.K. Candidates are selected based on their outstanding scholarly achievements, character, commitment to others and the common good, and potential for leadership. Current honors juniors who are U.S. citizens with a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher are eligible to apply. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By June 1 before the start of senior year, (1) complete the and (2) sign and submit the .
  • Following the suggested deadlines in the Office of National Fellowships timeline, submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions of CV/resume and both essays (Academic Statement and Personal Statement). Note that the office (and others) cannot give you editorial advice for these materials, but we will have regular meetings to discuss your writing progress. Meetings are required.
  • Interview is required.

Schwarzman Scholars – 3 units

The Schwarzman Scholars offers a full scholarship for the brightest student leaders around the globe to complete a one-year Master's in Global Affairs degree (taught in English) at the prestigious Tsinghua University in China. Recipients are selected based on their leadership abilities, exemplary character and integrity, academic aptitude and intellectual ability, empathy and cultural competency, open mindedness, and entrepreneurial spirit. The program covers tuition, fees, room and board, travel to and from Beijing, in-country study tours, books and supplies, a Lenovo laptop, health insurance, and a personal stipend. Applications are due in the early fall of senior year; therefore, applicants must begin the process Spring of their junior year. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

SMART – 1 unit

The Department of Defense’s SMART Scholarship Program provides tuition and fees, a stipend of $30,000 per year, summer internships, and guaranteed employment with the DoD post-graduation. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher who are pursuing a degree and a career in one of the 24 SMART-approved STEM fields are eligible to apply. Recipients commit to working one year in the federal government for each year of funding received. Citizens of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom are eligible to apply. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By October 15, sign and submit the .
  • Submit three substantial rounds of revisions of all short answers and essays (CV/resume, Community/Volunteer Experience, Leadership Experience, Teamwork Experience, Publications/Presentations, Awards and Honors, Proposed Area of Study, Sponsoring Facility Preferences, and Personal Statement) to national.fellowships@unh.edu. Drafts must be submitted at a minimum of 5 business days apart (business days are M-F 9AM – 5PM and exclude weekends and holidays). 

Soros Fellowship – 2 units

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans Program honors the contributions of immigrants and children of immigrants to the United States. Each Fellow receives up to $90,000 in financial support over two years, and they join a lifelong community of New American Fellows. Applications are due in the early fall of senior year; therefore, applicants must begin the process Spring of their junior year. 

  Requirements for Honors Units:

Truman Scholarship – 3 units

The Truman Scholarship celebrates rising public service leaders by providing up to $30,000 in funding for those pursuing a graduate degree in public service fields. Undergraduate juniors who are committed to public service are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be nominated by the University and be U.S. citizens or U.S. national residents of American Samoa. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By November 1 of your junior year, sign and submit the .
  • Submit nomination application by UNH deadline.
  • Note: Honors units are only available to the student who is nominated for the Truman Scholarship. If selected for nomination: 
    • Submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions of all eight short answer responses (leadership, public service, societal problem, most significant courses, Washington Summer Institute issue, graduate program, post-graduate career goals, long-term career goals) and Policy Proposal essay. Drafts must be submitted at a minimum of 5 business days apart (business days are M-F 9AM – 5PM and exclude weekends and holidays) 

Boren Scholarship – 2 units

The Boren Scholarship provides U.S. undergraduates up to $25,000 to study languages abroad in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad participation, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. In exchange for funding, Boren recipients agree to work for the federal government for a year. Students interested in public service, national security (broadly defined), and language acquisition are encouraged to apply. Must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application deadline.

  • Submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions of both essays (National Security and Motivation and Public Service Careers and all short answer responses (language plans, career plans, and study plan summary) to national.fellowships@unh.edu. Drafts must be submitted at a minimum of 5 business days apart (business days are M-F 9AM – 5PM and exclude weekends and holidays).

Critical Language Scholarship - 1 unit

The Critical Language Scholarship is a fully funded summer program that provides seven- to ten-week group-based intensive language instruction in critical languages: Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. Undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens are eligible to apply. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By October 15, sign and submit the .
  • Submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions of all short answer essays (Commitment to Language Learning, Preparation for the CLS Program, and Citizen Diplomacy and National Impact) and Personal Statement to national.fellowships@unh.edu. Drafts must be submitted at a minimum of 5 business days apart (business days are M-F 9AM – 5PM and exclude weekends and holidays).

Freeman-ASIA Scholarship – 1 unit

Freeman-ASIA supports U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia with up to $7,000 per academic year. Current undergraduates planning to pursue graduate study in Asia are encouraged to apply. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; receive need-based financial aid or demonstrate verifiable need for financial assistance; have a minimum GPA of 2.8; and applied or been accepted to a study abroad program in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By March 15, sign and submit the .
  • Submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions of both essays (Statement of Purpose and Service Proposal) and short answer questions (Languages and Asian Studies) to national.fellowships@unh.edu. Drafts must be submitted at a minimum of 5 business days apart (business days are M-F 9AM – 5PM and exclude weekends and holidays).

Gilman Scholarship – 1 unit

The Gilman Scholarship provides up to $5,000 for study abroad experiences to undergraduate students who receive a Pell Grant. Supplemental awards are available for those studying critical languages or conducting STEM research abroad. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and receive a Pell grant to be eligible to apply. 

Fall (October) Deadline Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By September 5 of the year you intend to apply, sign and submit the .
  • Submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions of all essays (Motivations for Studying or Interning Abroad, Knowledge and Skill Development through Studying and Interning Abroad, Gilman Scholars as Citizen Diplomats, and Contributions to U.S. Communities and Follow-on Service Project Proposal) to national.fellowships@unh.edu. Drafts must be submitted at a minimum of 5 business days apart (business days are M-F 9AM – 5PM and exclude weekends and holidays). 

Spring (March) Deadline Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By January 30 of the year you intend to apply, sign and submit the .
  • Submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions of all essays (Motivations for Studying or Interning Abroad, Knowledge and Skill Development through Studying and Interning Abroad, Gilman Scholars as Citizen Diplomats, and Contributions to U.S. Communities and Follow-on Service Project Proposal) to national.fellowships@unh.edu. Drafts must be submitted at a minimum of 5 business days apart (business days are M-F 9AM – 5PM and exclude weekends and holidays). 

Luce Scholarship – 3 units

The Luce Scholarship offers early-career leaders immersive, professional experiences in Asia. It provides stipends, language training, and individualized professional placement in Asia for 15 - 18 Luce Scholars each year. Current juniors who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible to apply. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

Marshall Scholarship – 4 units

The Princeton in Africa Program fosters mutual appreciation and cross-cultural understanding between the US and Africa through immersive work fellowships in host organizations and communities. The Princeton in Africa Program aims to contribute to building a world where individuals share a mutual appreciation and respect for the diversity of cultures and perspectives and cultivate life-long bridges to Africa. Financial values vary by post and include a housing and living stipend. Current seniors are eligible to apply.

Princeton in Asia – 2 units

The Princeton in Asia Program fosters mutual appreciation and cross-cultural understanding between the US and Asia through immersive work fellowships in host organizations and communities. The Princeton in Asia Program aims to contribute to building a world where individuals share a mutual appreciation and respect for the diversity of cultures and perspectives and cultivate life-long bridges to Asia. Financial values vary by post and include a housing and living stipend. Current seniors are eligible to apply.

The Princeton in Latin America Program aims to contribute to building a world where individuals share a mutual appreciation and respect for the diversity of cultures and perspectives and cultivate life-long bridges to Latin America. Financial values vary by post and include a housing and living stipend. Current seniors are eligible to apply.

UK Fulbright Summer Institute – 2 units

The UK Fulbright Summer Institute is a three- to four-week program for undergraduate freshmen and sophomores who have had little opportunity to immerse themselves in a different culture. Participants can explore the culture, heritage, and history of the UK while experiencing higher education at a UK university. The award covers: round-trip airfare, transfer from and to UK airport, tuition and fees at the host institution, accommodation and some meals, social and cultural program with free activities, Fulbright support services, and in some cases a daily allowance. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with little study/travel experience outside of North America and a minimum GPA of 3.7. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By December 15 of freshman or sophomore year, sign and submit the .
  • Submit three (3) substantial rounds of revisions of Personal Statement and all short essay questions (Activities, Programme, Leadership, Challenge, Reason for Fully Funded Program) to national.fellowships@unh.edu, Drafts must be submitted at a minimum of 5 business days apart (business days are M-F 9AM – 5PM and exclude weekends and holidays).

The Churchill Scholarship offers a one-year research master’s in science, mathematics, and engineering at the University of Cambridge in the U.K. Recipients are selected based on academic and research achievements. Fulbright provides a living stipend, travel to and from the host country, and other benefits depending on the host country. US citizens are eligible to apply. Applications are due in the early fall of senior year; therefore, applicants must begin the process Spring of their junior year. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

NOAA Hollings Scholarship – 2 units

The NOAA Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate sophomores up to $9,500 for two years of academic study and a 10-week paid ($700/week) summer internship at a NOAA facility. Sophomores pursuing a degree in a field that supports NOAA’s programs and mission are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. 

Requirements for Honors Units:

  • By December 15 of sophomore year, sign and submit the .
  • Submit three substantial rounds of revisions of all six short answer essay questions (Academic and Career Goals, Motivation for applying to Hollings, Scientific/Environmental/Community Challenge, Ability to Overcome Challenges, Leadership, Impact of Award) to national.fellowships@unh.edu. James Madison Fellowship – 3 units

The James Madison Graduate Fellowship provides up to $24,000 for a two-year master’s degree to individuals desiring to become outstanding teachers of the American Constitution at the secondary school level. Applicants compete only against other applicants from their state of legal residence. Current seniors who are U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.

Boren Scholarship – 2 units

The Boren Scholarship provides U.S. undergraduates up to $25,000 to study languages abroad in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad participation, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. In exchange for funding, Boren recipients agree to work for the federal government for a year. Students interested in public service, national security (broadly defined), and language acquisition are encouraged to apply. Must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application deadline.

Critical Language Scholarship - 1 unit

The Critical Language Scholarship is a fully funded summer program that provides seven- to ten-week group-based intensive language instruction in critical languages: Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. Undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.

Luce Scholarship – 3 units

The Luce Scholarship offers early-career leaders immersive, professional experiences in Asia. It provides stipends, language training, and individualized professional placement in Asia for 15 - 18 Luce Scholars each year. Current juniors who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible to apply.
