The DoD National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship Program is a competitive fellowship that is awarded to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. dual citizens who intend to pursue a Doctoral degree aligned to the DoD services Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) in research and development at a U.S. institution of their choice.

Value: The NDSEG Fellowship lasts for 3 years and pays for full tuition and all mandatory fees; a monthly stipend ($43,200 annually); a $5,000 travel budget over the Fellow’s tenure for professional development; and up to $1,600 a year in health insurance.

Eligibility: Be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Dual Citizen, or U.S. National (as defined below); Have completed your undergraduate studies prior to the commencement of the fellowship in September; Be applying to, accepted to, or currently enrolled at an accredited graduate-level institution within the United States; Have at *least* THREE remaining years in your graduate degree program as of September (and no more than two completed graduate study years); Intend to pursue a doctoral degree; Be pursuing research in alignment with one or more specific topics identified in the Department of Defense's Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs).

NDSEG Application Deadlines

  • November 1, 2025: DEADLINE – Submit all materials by October 30, 2025 to allow for sufficient upload time.

NDSEG Recommended Steps and Timeline

  1. By August 5, 2025: Review the , carefully read the application instructions, and create an account to start your online application. Familiarize yourself with the work done by the three sponsoring DoD facilities: Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), the Army Research Office (ARO), and the Office of Naval Research (ONR). Review the DoD Strategy Document. 
  2. By August 19, 2025: Meet with Office of National Fellowships to discuss potential recommenders, your research and alignment with DoD, and your resume/CV.
  3. By August 26, 2025: Contact recommenders to ask for recommendations. Submit first draft of Personal Statement to Office of National Fellowships (national.fellowships@unh.edu).
  4. September - October: Complete drafts and revisions of Personal Statement and Research Essay.
  5. By October 21, 2025: Complete nomination agreement form and FERPA form to request a copy of your UNH transcript.
  6. October 30, 2025: Submit your application ahead of the November 1, 2025 national deadline to allow for sufficient upload time.
