Supporting Your Student's Wellness
College is a significant transition, offering students new opportunities to explore independence, forge connections, and grow both academically and personally. As a caregiver, maintaining open communication and being aware of how the college experience can both challenge and enhance one’s overall well-being can help your student find success.
How to talk to your student about….
- Wellness is an active process of caring for your whole self.
There are many areas of a student’s wellness that need to be taken care of to prevent illness and feel motivated, confident, and at ease. Learning how to continually balance personal, academic, and social time and energy is an essential self-care skill. Read more about wellness in college. - Stress is natural in college (and life)
We stress about things that are important to us. And as students, doing well in school, adjusting to a new environment, and making friends are all stressful because they are meaningful experiences. You can normalize the occurrence of stress and encourage your student to take action to ease its negative impact by utilizing coping strategies and accessing campus resources. Read more about stress in college. - We all have mental health, just like we all have physical health
Mental health is one’s psychological responses to day-to-day living. Mental health is feeling worried before an exam, sad at the loss of a relationship, and feeling angry when something in life happens that seems unfair. Being able to recognize the variety of emotions we experience and respond to ourselves with kindness, care, and action is good mental health. Fluctuations in emotional states are healthy. - Decision making and substance use in college (and beyond)
Meeting new friends, understanding the academic demands of college, and coping with stress are common motivators for substance use among college students. The freedom and opportunities that come with college can lead students to experiment with alcohol, cannabis, nicotine, tobacco, and other drugs. As a caregiver, you can play a crucial role in helping your student mitigate unintended harmful consequences of substance use by helping them make informed decisions that prioritize their well-being.
