Many students participate in a study abroad program as part of their UNH educational experience. If you are considering returning to on-campus housing or have not completed the On-Campus Housing Requirement, check out the information below.
If you have any questions, please contact us at housing@unh.edu.
Coming Back from a Study Abroad Program
We are excited to have you back on campus! We encourage students to plan ahead and ensure they secure housing for their return. Students who are returning from a study abroad can request to live on campus. It is important that you check if the On-Campus Housing Requirement applies to you upon your return. If it does, you are required to live on campus when you come back.
- If you are not required to live on campus and did not participate in the selection process that happened in the Fall, complete a housing application. You will be placed on the waitlist and an offer for housing will be made if a space is available. Housing is not guaranteed for students who are not required to live on campus.
- If you are required to live on campus next academic year (when you return), you will need to participate in the housing selection process that occurs in the Spring semester while you are on your study abroad program. Please complete the Housing Application and reach out to UNH Housing to add your application to the general selection process.
- For students who want to apply for on-campus housing for the Spring semester, submit a Spring Semester housing application (generally available in October). In the application you can let us know you are returning from Study Abroad. You will be hand-assigned by UNH Housing staff based on availability and your preferences. Please note that Housing is not guaranteed for students who are not required to live on campus.
- For students who want to apply for on-campus housing for the next academic year:
- If you are not required to live on campus next academic year and want to participate in the self-selection process happening in the Fall, please complete the Housing Application and reach out to UNH Housing to add your application to the general selection process.
- If you are required to live on campus next year, then you will participate in a process when you are back on campus in the Spring semester.
Leaving for a Study Away Program
Congratulations on your upcoming study away! Students who have on-campus housing assignments for the semester(s) in which they will be studying away must submit a petition for early release online. See below for specifics depending on which semester you will be studying away during.
If you have an on-campus housing assignment and are approved for a UNH study away program during the Spring semester of an academic year, please submit a petition for early release online. UNH Housing will verify your study abroad approval. Once approved for an early release, your Spring housing assignment will be cancelled. You must submit the petition for early release, or you will be charged for your Spring semester housing assignment.
If you have an on-campus housing assignment and are approved for a UNH study away program during the Fall semester of an academic year, please submit a petition for early release online. UNH Housing will verify your study abroad approval. Once approved for an early release, your entire academic year* housing assignment will be cancelled. You must submit the petition for early release, or you will be charged for your Fall semester housing assignment.
* Please note that when a Fall semester housing assignment is cancelled, the respective Spring semester housing assignment is also cancelled. Students returning in Spring semester who need on-campus housing must reapply for housing. See "Students student away in Fall semester" section above.
