House Bill 1793 Update

Can you provide an update on legislation pending in the state house that would allow the carrying of firearms on campus?

If enacted, would prohibit the state's public colleges and universities from "restricting the possession, carry, [or] storage" of firearms on our campuses.

For years, each institution within the University System of New Hampshire, including the Â鶹app, has prohibited the carrying of firearms on campus. wasadopted under authority granted by the Legislature to the Board of Trustees and campus presidents to govern university property. As residential campuses, we believe this long-standing policy supports community safety and helps most students, faculty, and staff feel comfortable in their living, learning, and working environment. The university system has shared this position with lawmakers and will continue to do so.

In early February, House Bill 1793 passed the New Hampshire House of Representatives. The bill is now pending in the State Senate, and we anticipate the Senate will hold a public hearing in the coming weeks.

Community members who wish to share their opinion in support or opposition to the legislation may do so only in their personal capacity. Faculty and staff should consult the university system's guidelines on political activity and public advocacy before engaging in such activity. At this time, UNH’s policy remains in effect. If House Bill 1793 were to become law, the university would communicate in a timely fashion about our next steps.
