First Choice Destination

UNH is a first-choice destination for students seeking public higher education in New England.

While UNH is already a first-choice university for many, we’re working to expand that distinction among motivated prospective students who are seeking a university that matches their ambition and values. By advancing academic excellence, research impact, a vibrant campus, and student success, we will continue to attract a highly driven student body and ensure every student thrives academically, socially, and professionally. With a focus on faculty excellence, research, career pathways, student support, and campus culture, UNH will reinforce its status as a premier public university in New England.

Goal:

Increase market share of students seeking higher education in the New England region.

  • Support data-informed and modern recruitment & yield strategies, including refining and optimizing scholarship and financial aid strategy.
  • Develop clear messaging that highlights outcomes, value, and career pathways, align storytelling across academic, athletic, alumni & stakeholder channels and focus on the university's areas of differentiation.
  • Monitor, elevate, and promote improvements in the student experience.

Interdisciplinary Teaching & Research Excellence

UNH has distinctive interdisciplinary teaching and research strengths.

UNH is a Land, Sea, and Space Grant university with recognized strengths across the arts, sciences, humanities, and professional disciplines. Our distinctive interdisciplinary education and research bring together world-class faculty from diverse fields to spark innovation, deepen understanding, and prepare students to tackle complex, real-world challenges in New Hampshire and beyond. To support this and the other priorities of the plan, we must take steps to identify the unique programs that will set us apart from our peers. A focus on a small number of truly differentiated programs will lift the entire university through increased reputation and perception in a crowded, competitive marketplace for students, faculty, and funding.

Goal:

Increase interdisciplinary impact with a focus on the university's areas of differentiation.

  • Increase the percentage of students who graduate with a major or minor connected to an area of differentiation.
  • Increase the number of external proposals submitted/funded in the areas of differentiation.
  • Establish a committee to review and evolve policies and practices to document, support, and promote interdisciplinary teaching and research, including encouraging chairs to collaborate in offering programs that bridge disciplines and enhance interdisciplinary learning outcomes.

Commitment to Well-Being & Belonging

UNH commits to fostering a community of well-being and belonging.

Through collaboration and innovative programs, policies, and practices, UNH will promote and embody well-being, belonging, and accessibility, empowering students and employees to thrive both personally and professionally in a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive UNH community.

Goal:

Increase the percentage of community members and employees who feel that they belong at and are supported by UNH.

  • Assess and strengthen the University’s commitment to well‑being, and belonging by utilizing existing survey tools, developing additional instruments as needed, and systematically deploying and analyzing data to inform continuous improvement.
  • Deans and vice-presidents develop and integrate well-being initiatives and related Key Performance Indicators into their strategic plans and report on them annually.
  • Develop and implement well-being education programs across the eight dimensions of wellness into existing programming and training opportunities (orientation programs, faculty development, and student success initiatives).

Strengthening UNH's Impact

The Â鶹app enhances the state’s prosperity by developing talent, driving innovation and strengthening communities.

We help New Hampshire thrive by preparing students with the skills they need for the careers of today and tomorrow, conducting research that addresses real-world problems, and partnering with communities and businesses to set priorities that drive impact. Together, we improve lives, protect natural and cultural resources, and build a stronger, healthier future for our state.

Goal:

Increase the number of active partnerships with NH employers related to workforce, research and development, co-location, sponsorships, and/or philanthropy.

  • Develop an industry engagement council to drive collaboration, address current partnership related challenges, and develop and implement best practices among key units. Proactively identify and prioritize high-value NH employer sectors with links to the university’s areas of differentiation.
  • Increase the percentage of students who participate in a pre-professional experience with a NH employer. Strengthen internal support, coordination, and tracking for work-based learning/internships/field placements across academic and non-academic units.
  • Improve internal processes for managing the various types of external engagements, including generating/administering contracts, developing a variable indirect rate scale, streamlining implementation systems and management processes.
