The Daily Yonder: Parts of Rural America Are Adding Adult Population and Diversity, Census Shows

Data from the 2020 U.S. Census shows an increase in diversity among the adult population in rural counties. The Daily Yonder recently examined this change and included insight from Ken Johnson, senior demographer at the Carsey School, who explained how people of color and Hispanics are contributing to the growing population in over 95% of rural America.

Stepping Up to the Plate

While many students remain free of the burden of food insecurity, a growing number of others – perhaps as many as 20 percent of students, based on results of a recent survey – are not. The newly opened Cats’ Cupboard, a food pantry exclusively for students in room 140A of the MUB, is hoping to close that gap.

Boosting Biomanufacturing

Researchers in UNH’s Surface Enhanced Electrochemical Diagnostic Sensors (SEEDS) Lab have received an EPSCoR grant from the National Science Foundation for close to $6 million to lead a team in developing sensors to promote quality control in biomanufacturing — the production of important biomaterials used in medicine, food and even engineered human organs — a field that is becoming a significant sector of the economy.
