Learn how to properly bundle up to fend off frigid temperatures

Tuesday, December 16, 2025

'Tis the season for bundling up against elements like blowing snow and aggressive wind chills. And who better to ask for tips on how to stay warm during the winter than someone who works outside in the Arctic?ĚýCheristy Jones has spent a total of 12 months doing fieldwork in Greenland, Alaska, and northern Sweden during her Ph.D. at UNH. Her research looks at greenhouse gasses in Arctic landscapes and waterways, specifically carbon dioxide and methane.

“I study water quality in streams and lakes, so really trying to understand what's in the water and how that might change in the future,” she says.

That makes Jones something of an expert on how to layer up to fend off frigid temperatures and avoid getting chilly in wet conditions. We asked her to share her expertise so you can bundle up comfortably this winter.
