Channeling a Passion for Sustainability into Action as a Student at UNH
Wondering about ways students are involved in sustainability at UNH? Meet Taylor Barry, a sophomore studying community and environmental planning and sustainability.
How did you get excited about sustainability and involved at UNH?
I have been interested in the environment ever since fifth grade when I learned about deforestation and water pollution. Then, I thought that environmental protection was individualized. However, once I entered high school, I learned that environmental protection was much more comprehensive. I became the student representative for my high school on my city’s Energy and Environment Committee. Additionally, I joined the 350NH Youth Team, conducting grassroots advocacy for climate justice. These experiences inspired me to utilize public policy and people power to initiate positive change in my community.
Coming into college, I wanted to continue to do this empowering work. I chose UNH because of its prominent reputation for sustainability. I am so glad that I did!
Tell us about a favorite sustainability-related class. Why was it so impactful?
My favorite sustainability-related class so far at UNH has been the B Impact Clinic. Alongside a team, I was paired with a graphic design company named 87th St. Creative. The sole owner of the company hoped to add the B Corp certification to one of the business’ marks of sustainability. My team helped 87th St. officially become a B Corp in 2025! It was incredible to gain real-world consulting experience and build friendships with my team members. Additionally, the hands-on work on the B Impact Clinic was more valuable to my education than any class alone.
Tell us about your favorite sustainability hands-on experience, internship, or fellowship at UNH.
This past fall, I worked as a member of the Trash to Treasure (T2T) core team. I helped set up the T2T sale in the fall so that students could purchase gently used items when they came back from campus. This not only saved money but diverted waste from the landfill. I had so much fun setting up the sale- driving around in UHaul trucks, blasting music, shopping, and hanging out with my coworkers. It was a great way to ease my transition back to school in the fall, get involved, and make a little bit of money!
What sustainability experiences at UNH have impacted you the most, and in what ways?
Currently, I am a coach for the Changemaker Fellowship and Sustainability Advocates programs. Through these positions, I educate and engage students in sustainability projects, both on and off campus. Additionally, I work alongside other coaches and interns through the Sustainability Institute. These positions have connected me with other individuals who care just as much about sustainability and social justice as I do. Through the Sustainability Institute, I have built community at UNH.
What do you love most about UNH?
I love UNH’s location! From here, it is only 2 hours to the White Mountains, 20 mins to the beach, and an hour to Boston/ Portland. These short drives allow me to go on fun outdoor adventures with my friends! Additionally, the four seasons are beautiful on campus.
What advice do you have for current students, or students considering UNH, who are interested in sustainability?
Get involved! There are so many opportunities available at UNH! From classes to internships to sports to clubs, there are so many ways to make your experience at UNH both meaningful and memorable.
