Law Student Gets Up-Close Look at New York Fashion Week

Grace Lamendola is quite literally completing a law school internship in style.
Lamendola, a second-year law student at UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law, is serving as an editorial intern with The Fashion Law, a publication covering the intersection of fashion, business, and law. The opportunity has taken her to the outlet’s headquarters in New York City, where she also recently got to experience New York Fashion Week up close.
“There’s something pretty exciting about seeing the industry you’re writing about come to life around you,” Lamendola wrote in a post on LinkedIn.
So how did Lamendola land the desirable opportunity? By asking a simple question.
“Over the summer, I decided to reach out and ask whether they offered opportunities for interns. Luckily, they did,” she says. “Sometimes getting your foot in the door really does start with simply sending the email.”
Her role at The Fashion Law entails contributing to editorial projects exploring the legal issues affecting the fashion and creative industries. She is learning how to turn complex legal issues into copy that is engaging and approachable for readers, and the experience has allowed her to discover just how much legal work takes place away from the public eye to protect brands and influence the fashion world.
"I've loved getting a behind-the-scenes look at the legal issues shaping the fashion and creative industries while getting to work on projects that combine two things I really enjoy: writing and law," Lamendola says.
The internship brought Lamendola back to her home state. A native of Albany, New York, she chose UNH Law because she fell in love with downtown Concord – and it’s profusion of affordable coffee – on her first visit. She also fell in love with the law school’s vibe.
“I loved the close-knit feel of the law school and the sense that I could really make my own path here,” she says. “It’s been a busy, challenging, and rewarding experience so far, and I’ve had the opportunity to explore some pretty unique areas of law.”
Throughout he’s had a strong interest in intellectual property law, particularly in trademarks and brand protection, and The Fashion Law internship has allowed her to stretch her skills in those areas while also sharpening her writing and research abilities.
“I’m excited to keep growing as a writer and sharpening my legal research skills, but especially to keep learning from the amazing people at The Fashion Law. My mentors have been incredibly inspiring, and getting to learn from people who are doing such interesting work has made me even more excited to keep exploring this field,” Lamendola says.
She’s learning skills that she can carry forward when she enters the legal field professionally. And given the subject matter, it’s the kind of internship that doesn’t just look good on paper.
“It’s been exciting – and, of course, totally fashionable!” she quips. “I’ve learned how important it is to develop and write in a specific editorial voice, manage multiple deadlines, and turn complex legal issues into writing that people actually want to read.”
