Travel Considerations &Բ;

We encourage our international students and scholars on temporary visas to approach non-essential international travel carefully.  If you have international travel plans, please contact your OISS advisor to discuss potential risks. 

If you must travel internationally, please consider: &Բ; 

  • Visa processing, necessary documents, and reentry rules 

  • Potential heightened scrutiny and vetting from officials when entering the U.S. &Բ;

  • Current travel proclamations and restrictions impacting citizens from certain countries (see below) 

Current Travel Proclamations/ Restrictions

The United States fully or partially suspended entry for and visa issuance to nationals of 39 countries, and individuals applying using travel documents issued or endorsed by the Palestinian Authority.

Provisional I-94: Entering the U.S. from Canada by land or sea

Effective September 30, 2025, there are new procedures that you MUST comply with prior to re-entering the United States at a land border. You may not complete this process at the land border office. You may complete this process up to 7 days before you plan to return to the U.S.  

Note: If you are flying back from Canada, this does not apply to you or your travel.  

Step 1: visit:   

Step 2: Click on “Apply for I-94” tab   

Step 3: Read the information, then click the small box to confirm your understand in the section “Mode of Entry” to get started. The form will then show.  

Step 4: You will need your passport to complete this process. Fill in the information requested under Travel Application  

Step 5: After you complete the application, you will click on the tab to pay through Pay.gov  

Starting September 30, 2025, all individuals entering by land or sea must apply for a provisional I-94 before entering the U. S. This process costs $30 for each application (each entry). Both the I-94 website and CBP Link Mobile Application will automatically direct the applicant to the Pay.gov website. Payment must be made by either PayPal or credit card/debit card for a provisional I-94 to be issued. The Pay.gov system currently accepts the following credit card/debit cards: MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover.  

You will receive a receipt that you should print and save for your records.   

Step 6: You must appear at a port of entry within seven days. At the port of entry, you will show the CBP officer your passport, provisional I-94 receipt and your signed I 20 or DS 2019.  

Note: If you do not appear at the border within seven days or are not issued an I-94 for any reason, the provisional I-94 will expire, and you will be required to begin the I-94 process again. There are no refunds.  

What to expect at the port of entry, you may be asked to:  

Submit your biometrics (fingerprint or facial scan, if required) at the port of entry and complete an interview, show evidence of your student status and/or where you reside in the U. S.  

Step 7: Enter the U.S.

F-1 Students,  J-1 Students, and J-1 Scholars 

  • Passport
  • Paper copy of most recent I-94 record 
  • Paper copy of most recent Form I-20 or DS-2019, 
  • Driving license/non-driver ID (if applicable) 
  • Employment Authorization Document (EAD) (if applicable) 

H-1B and O-1 Employees  

  • Passport
  • Paper copy of most recent I-94 record  
  • Paper copy of H-1B or O-1 Approval Notice 
  • Driving license/non-driver ID (if applicable)
