The Career & Internship Fair maintains a “carry in-carry out” policy with all of employer materials. We will not accept shipments of booths, displays, or marketing items in advance of the fair, nor are we responsible for shipping any items out for organizations following the fair. All career fair materials must arrive and leave with representatives at the end of the event.

Sustainable Swag Policy

The 鶹app is platinum sustainability rated from STARS (the highest possible under the AASHE’s rating system) and committed to sustainability in all forms of our operations. This policy, using the UNH Marketing and Communications guidelines, is designed to support employers in selecting promotional products that align with the University’s commitment to sustainability. The policy helps to reduce waste by prioritizing responsibly sourced materials, ethical production practices, and long-lasting items.

Many employers offer free “swag” to encourage engagement and connection at career fairs and events. Common items include T-shirts, water bottles, trinkets, and stickers. While these giveaways are well-intentioned, a significant portion is discarded shortly after being received or during student move-out periods—an issue reflected each semester through UNH's move-in/move-out student swap "Trash 2 Treasure."

To reduce unnecessary waste and promote more responsible choices, we encourage our employers to pause and ask: “Do I really need this? Is this compelling to students for recruitment purposes?”. Thoughtful consideration before distributing swag can make a meaningful difference.

To encourage you to think about your impact before bringing items to campus, review the Hierarchy of Swag:

Be a hero, do nothing!

At the very top is Level 1, where there’s no physical items at all. In this case, the professional connection with students itself becomes the experience they remember, whether that’s a new LinkedIn connection, a job or internship position to apply for, an invitation to interview, or the knowledge about your organization they walk away with.

Don't get physical.

Next up is level 2, where an item is still shared but doesn’t necessarily create long-term physical waste. This could be something temporary or consumable; think: coffee vouchers, locally sourced goods, donations to their choice of non-profit, experience raffle, and more.

Be mindful!

Then we move into Level 3, with a focus on items that are functional, responsibly produced, and designed to last: The golden standard for sustainable swag. These items provide real everyday value, rather than becoming clutter overtime.

Just don't.

And finally, at the bottom is Level 4, which represents the types of swag we try to avoid. Low-quality, disposable, or unlikely to be used are all traits of products that often end up forgotten in drawers or eventually in the landfill.

If it is determined that swag is required, use the following prompts to consider sustainable swag.

Is it functional?

One of the most important considerations is functionality. Is this something people will actually use in their everyday lives? Because when swag serves a practical purpose, it naturally provides ongoing value, not an item sitting around collecting dust.

Consider durability

If an item is made from high-quality, long-lasting materials, people are more likely to use it overtime. That longevity plays a pivotal role in reducing waste while avoiding the need to cyclically replace items based on trends or low-quality.

Locality

Keep in mind where that product is coming from. Sourcing from local or regional vendors encourages more transparent and responsible production practices. Embrace New Hampshire!

Our career fairs are public events that support free speech and open dialogue. While we strive to maintain a welcoming environment, peaceful demonstrations may occur near the event. All demonstrations must follow university policies and may not disrupt scheduled activities or interfere with attendees’ participation.

The safety and well-being of all participants remain our top priority. We work closely with campus partners, including leadership, public safety and student affairs, to ensure a secure and respectful environment. If campus officials become aware of potential demonstrations, timely updates will be shared with attendees, and additional support as needed.

Should you have any concerns or require assistance during the event, please do not hesitate to contact our staff on-site. We are committed to supporting both employers and students in fostering meaningful and safe interactions.
