“There are a lot of ways to help people and the planet, just find where your talents, passions, and needs of society intersect.â€

Meet Mikey Pasciuto ‘21, co-founder and chief sustainability officer of Scrapp, Inc. Mikey graduated from UNH with a dual degree in mechanical engineering and sustainability and did just that during his time at UNH. His company helps "organizations reduce waste costs, avoid landfills, and minimize emissions with a suite of digital waste accounting and communication software."

How did your time at UNH prepare you for where you are today?

"UNH prepared me for the non-uniformity that comes with the real world. Having a different major path than most other students and a build-your-own experience with the sustainability dual major really helped set me up for what was next. The ECenter was also so incredibly helpful with learning about the business world and entrepreneurship."

Where do you see yourself in five years? In 10?

"I don't really know where I will be. I like to live by the expression 'If you want to make god laugh tell him what your plans are'. I think the constants in my life will probably be working in the sustainability space and my family."

What do you know now that you wish you'd known while an undergrad?

I try not to punish my old self too much for knowledge you can only gain through experience. Going back, I would probably tell myself to worry about the grades a little bit less, as the experiences are worth more both in life and on your resume.

What person or course most influenced you while at UNH? How?

Introduction to Sustainability Engineering with Professor Kyle Kwiatowski. I wouldn't have started Scrapp if it weren't for that class. He was what brought me and my co-founders together to start Scrapp as a final project.

What advice do you have for students interested in your field?

Don't wait for permission to get started. There isn't anything stopping you from doing the research on your own and learning the skills ahead of time. This is also an amazing way to find out if you really like this field or not. The experience one would have from sustainability in energy and sustainability in public policy are so wildly different. There are a lot of ways to help people and the planet, just find where your talents, passions, and needs of society intersect.

What do you miss most about UNH?

College Woods, intramural sports, and lunch at the Dairy Bar before boarding the Downeaster.

Please tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I have had over 40 pets since I was a kid.
