Why did you decide to do a master’s in justice studies at UNH?
An important reason I chose to attend UNH for graduate school was because of the possible opportunities I could seize while I am here. UNH is rich in research and opportunities within the juvenile justice field, with two examples being the Crimes Against Children Research Center and the Sibling-on-Sibling Aggression and Abuse Model. It just seemed like the right fit for me given my previous experience and my goals for the future.
How have you been supported by faculty at UNH?
As a student who was previously unfamiliar with UNH, the faculty have been more than welcoming to me as I entered this program. Professors also make themselves easily available for office hours to give extra support if I need it.
"UNH is rich in research and opportunities."
What are some of the coolest experiences you’ve had?
I have been fortunate enough to intern with Juvenile Probation and Parole of Rochester, New Hampshire. This is a particular role in the juvenile justice field that I am interested in long-term, so this experience has been excellent for me. Additionally, the relationships I’ve created with my cohort have absolutely made this program special for me. We have become a very close-knit team, which has been an incredible experience to have.

How has your internship been valuable?
My internship has been immensely valuable to me and my career goals. In my opinion, gaining hands-on experience in this field is crucial for success. Academic knowledge of the criminal justice system is important; however, gaining experience in this field is vital to ensure you are both in the right role, and equipped to handle the challenging dynamics that will inevitably present themselves.
What is your area of interest and why did you choose it?
I graduated from Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) in Manchester, New Hampshire, with a BA in psychology, concentrating in forensics. While at SNHU, I interned with the Child Advocacy Center of Laconia, New Hampshire. After graduating, I then found employment as a children’s case manager and care coordinator before deciding to pursue graduate school. Juvenile justice is my professional passion, which is why UNH seemed like a good fit for me.

How is your current job complementing what you’re learning in your program?
Outside of graduate school, I am employed by Somersworth Police Department (PD) as a dispatcher. Although still new to the role, I am really enjoying my time with Somersworth PD and have learned a lot from them. I have been fortunate enough to experience various roles both in employment and internships that have allowed me to gain a well-rounded view of the justice system. Having these experiences allows me to apply real world knowledge to what I learn in my courses.

What are some of the most important skills you’ve gained through your program?
Some skills I’ve gained within my time at UNH include strengthening my research and critical thinking skills, as well as advancing in collaboration and project management skills.
Why would you recommend this program to a prospective student?
I would recommend this program to any student who is looking to gain some more experience before jumping into the working world. I would also recommend this program to any student who enjoys research.
What are some of your favorite things to do near UNH?
UNH is in a very cool area of New Hampshire with tons of different things to explore and easy access to Maine or Massachusetts. In my free time, I can be found at the Suite Studio, a fitness studio in Dover, New Hampshire! I adore going to class there and being part of their community. Other than that, I love going to Regal Cinemas as much as I can, and spending time with my friends. I also recently started the process of volunteering with the Pope Memorial Humane Society - Cocheco Valley, an animal shelter in Dover.
