Research Title: L2 Spanish Learner's Perception of Spanish Downstep
Abstract: Research thus far on phonetics and phonology has mostly focused on segments and less on the holistic, whole contours found in intonation. Even less work has been completed on the perception of such contours, especially in cross-linguistic settings. This study will work to fill some of that gap by focusing on second language (L2) learners of Spanish’s perceptions of downstep - a stepwise, systemic lowering of pitch over the course of an utterance. I will have students from beginner, intermediate, and advanced level Spanish courses take a survey to determine their perceptions of downstep in Spanish. My hypothesis is that the results will stratify based on level; beginner Spanish students will have English-aligned perceptions of downstep while advanced Spanish students will have Spanish-aligned perceptions of downstep. This will allow us to better understand what L1 English speakers think of Spanish intonation, which can help us break down linguistic cultural barriers through understanding of correct perceptions. It will also help to create intonational learning outcomes for L2 Spanish learners to help them effectively and correctly utilise Spanish intonational contours.
