Abstract: Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone: A Unique Perspective on Interdisciplinary Team-Based Research

—Nolan Juneau (Mentor: Amy Boylan)

Over the summer of 2025, I was awarded an interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research Award (URA) among four other undergraduate students entitled ā€œFilming the History of Portsmouth’s Italian ā€˜North End’ Community,ā€ in which we planned the creation of a short documentary to focus on the immigration of Italian communities to Portsmouth’s ā€œNorth Endā€ district. Under the leadership of Dr. Amy Boylan, I acted as the technical director for the documentary in New Hampshire (cinematographer, editor, & sound designer), while Dr. Boylan and select students spent six weeks living in Italy to collect interview and location footage in Santarcangelo di Romagna. Being an electrical engineering major, I never expected to be able to conduct research in a field entirely different from my major while at university, but working on such a unique interdisciplinary project has allowed me to expand my research experience far beyond what I had thought possible. In addition, this project has allowed me to use my passion for filmmaking in a professional research environment, leading to the creation of a documentary short film that we plan to be submitted to the 2027 New Hampshire Film Festival.
