Fosters.com: Welcomed Guests or Potential Threats?

Research published by Jessica Carson of the Carsey School found that in the nation'sÌý199 rural countiesÌýwhere seasonal housing accounts for 25% or more of all housing units,Ìýthe average number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people is more than twice as high as in other rural counties. In efforts to discourage snowbirds and out-of-staters from flocking to their second homes in these counties, states have closed some public recreations sites, as well as public facilities and parking lots.

Concord Monitor: NH Counties Worry About Influx of Seasonal Visitors

According to Jessica Carson, an assistant research professor at the Carsey School, seasonalÌýhomes in New Hampshire account for more than 10% of all housing units, a proportion topped by only Maine at 16.4% and Vermont at 15.6%. More than 46,000 of the estimated 66,000 seasonal homes are in Belknap, Carroll, Coos, and Grafton counties. This is raising concerns within the community as to what will happen when these homes are filled by outsiders during the summer.Ìý
