Research published by Jessica Carson of the Carsey School found that in the nation'sÌý199 rural countiesÌýwhere seasonal housing accounts for 25% or more of all housing units,Ìýthe average number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people is more than twice as high as in other rural counties. In efforts to discourage snowbirds and out-of-staters from flocking to their second homes in these counties, states have closed some public recreations sites, as well as public facilities and parking lots.
