Eleven Ways UNH is Helping Communities be Environmentally Friendly

UNH researchers are partnering with local communities, farmers and residents to make the Earth a better place, often using participatory science to directly involve the public in the process. As Earth Day approaches on April 22, here are 10 ways UNH — home to the country’s first endowed Sustainability Institute — is helping local communities, and those around the world, preserve the planet.

Donors Lead UNH to Another Record-Setting (603) Challenge

The UNH community rallied together to once again make this year’s (603) Challenge a record-setting success, with more than 11,800 donors combining to raise more than $3.6 million for the university – the most money ever raised during a single challenge. It was the 11th consecutive year that the challenge has exceeded the previous year’s results.

What does it mean to be a Land, Sea and Space Grant university?ĚýThe triple designation signifies a collaboration between the U.S. government partners and UNH to produce and share research grounded in solutions that understand and improve the world around us.

Mapping the Deep

In December 2023, thanks to UNH, the United States grew by one million square kilometers.ĚýThe U.S. gained that seabed territory beyond 200 nautical miles from our coasts through a geopolitical process called the Extended Continental Shelf. To satisfy its requirements, the federal government turned to a team of the nation’s top ocean mappers: those at UNH.Ěý
