Even as their students were cleaning out their lockers and crossing the last few days of school off their calendars, a group of Manchester-area educators and administrators were signing themselves up for a little extra credit: a two-day professional development program designed to give them coding experience that they can integrate into their curricula.

Alyssa Mahoney lives in Gilmanton, New Hampshire, and works in Laconia, both just far enough away to make taking classes on UNH鈥檚 Durham or Manchester campuses problematic. 听

Biological sciences students Bruce Rheaume and Scott Mithoefer recently had their genomic research on deep-sea bacteria published in Genome Announcements, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Society for Microbiology.听

Becky Baker has always envisioned a career in a laboratory. Through hands-on lab experience on campus and at local internships, the senior is ready for her dream to materialize. On May 19, Baker听became the first graduate of UNH Manchester鈥檚 biotechnology program.

At 7:45 on Saturday morning, while most of us were sipping our first mug of coffee, dozens of students from the UNH College of Life Sciences and Agriculture (COLSA) were in the lounge outside the MUB theatres 鈥� awake, present and sharply dressed.

For months they鈥檇 been satisfying their intellectual curiosities 鈥� and boosting their intellectual capital 鈥� by conducting research. They鈥檇 arrived here to present the results of their scholarly investigations to faculty, staff, classmates and parents during the 25th annual COLSA Undergraduate Research Conference on April 23.
