Bloomberg: Nine Months After Lockdowns, U.S. Births Plummeted by 8%

Ken Johnson, Senior Demographer with Carsey School of Public Policy, was recently cited in Bloomberg regarding new data that in 2020,Ìý25 states had more deaths than births – a trend that has continued inÌýearlyÌý2021.

"In 2019, 5 states had more deaths than births. The most in U.S. history to that time," said Johnson. "In 2020, 25 states had more deaths than births. The decline has continued in early 2021."

Solving a Million Dollar Problem

A pesky little jellyfish-like animal is causing major problems—and major costs—for aquaculture everywhere by choosing to permanently live on aquafarming equipment, reducing production sustainability. New research from the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station at the Âé¶¹app sheds light on ways to dissuade these animals at early, larval stage from calling aquaculture production systems home.

Elizabeth Mamros '18ÌýÌý'23G, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering, was recently awarded a pair of fellowships to conduct research at theÌýInstitut fürÌýUmformtechnik und Leichtbau (IUL) in Dortmund, Germany.Ìý

The third-year student and Pennsylvania native received a Fulbright fellowship and a National Science Foundation Institute of International Education Graduate International Research Experiences (GIRE) fellowship. She plans to conduct research with novel manufacturing processes, particularly focusing on incremental forming technologies.
