Ethan Hickey ’26, an ocean engineering major, has been awarded a prestigious Department of Defense Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART ) Scholarship, a highly competitive program that provides full tuition, summer internship, and a guaranteed job with the DOD after graduation.
Hickey, afrom Coronado, California native, joins a list of 35 students honored from UNH since the program’s inception in 2001, continuing to cement its position as one of the top SMART-scholarship-producing institutions in New England and the U.S.
Hickey chose his internship and post-graduation placement at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he’ll contribute to submarine maintenance and upkeep. His career aspirations include research in the areas of ocean based renewable energy or air sea surface interactions.
“I’ll learn more during my site visit, but I know I’ll be working hands-on with systems that are critical to national defense,” says Hickey, who was drawn to the fellowship for both its benefits and the knowledge that he will be doing meaningful work with a high-level organization when he graduates.
At UNH, Hickey credits his experience in the Coupled Air-Sea Surface Layers Laboratory (CASSLL)—where he works on the Air-Sea Flux Buoy and drone-based weather systems—as key preparation. He’s also an active member of the climbing club and works at the Hamel Recreation Center.
“UNH provided me with the learning and research opportunities that made me a desirable and well-rounded candidate for this fellowship,” he says.
Looking ahead, Hickey hopes to pursue research in ocean-based renewable energy or air-sea surface interactions. For now, he’s focused on diving deeper into the field he’s passionate about.
