Deqa Dhalac '13G, a graduate of the Master in Community Development program at the Carsey School and an immigrant from Somali, has recently become likely the first Somali-American mayor in the United States, according to a news report by CNN. In 2018, Dhalac joined the South Portland, Maine, City Council. Then, in November 2022, she was unanimously voted as the city's new mayor by her colleagues on the Council
